| War on Drugs |
Gach: Sufficient? You must be kidding! Every year since Richard Milhouse Nixon initiated this futile war it has been escalated, until we now spend over 20 BILLION DOLLARS on it annually, not counting the cost to society of the loss of production and the broken households created BY THE WAR. It is racist in its enforcement, it disenfranchizes voters in several states, such as Florida, it breaks up families placing children in foster homes, it makes drugs attractive to children because they are forbidden, and now we are told that the profits made possible only because of the prohibitiion are financing terrorists throughout the world! The question is, "what would I change?" Very simple -- I would consider drug abuse a public health problem rather than a criminal "justice" problem, and immediately end the over 30 year War on Drugs! Immediately! Let the drug dealers find productive employment in other fields, and free doctors to prescribe and pharmacists to dispense drugs as they deem necessary. Alcohol prohibition was brought about the right way -- with a Constitutional Amendment; when it was determined that it did not work, it was repealed. There was never such an Amendment granting the federal government the power to prohibit drugs, and I maintain that therefore the War is unconstitutional. Source: Candidate Website Date: 10/07/2006 |

| Medical Use of Marijuana |
Gach: Of course!!! Where does the government get the right to determine that a medicine that works should be made unavailable to those who need it? Source: Candidate Website Date: 10/07/2006 |
| Legalization of Marijuana |
Gach: YES! Marijuana has never killed anyone; alcohol and tobacco kill about 400,000 each year. Marijuana has been called a "controlled substance", but in reality it is a PROHIBITED substance, and therefore NOT controlled. Tobacco is a controlled substance, less available to children than marijuana. (P.S.: I have had only one joint in my life, and I didn't inhale, a fact that, like President Clinton, I still regret.) | Punishments for Drug Crimes |
Gach: They are outrageous! Non violent "crimes" should not be punished more severely than violent crimes of murder and rape -- but they often are. Violent criminals are known to be set free because drug war victims have been sentenced to mandatory minimum sentences and must therefore remain in prison. If an addict wants to be cured, put him or her into treatment, not prison. Build treatment centers rather than more prisons. Source: Candidate Website Date: 10/07/2006 |
